Microdiscectomy: progress in spinal surgery
Spinal surgery once meant large incisions, long recovery periods, and painful rehabilitation. Surgical advances such as microdiscectomy have improved this process for the patient.
Microdiskectomy, also called microdecompression, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for patients with a herniated disc. When performing the procedure, portions of the herniated disc are removed to relieve pressure on the spine and relieve the resulting ischial pain.
According to the Spine Institute of San Diego, the microdiscectomy procedure can relieve pain in 95% of ischial pain caused by a herniated disc.
